How It All Started

In 1977, schoolteacher Judy Kilburn went out to buy a car and found the experience so frustrating she realized there had to be a better way. She did her homework and found that she could develop a service to provide virtually any make and model of car directly to consumers and save them time, money and frustration. American Chariots was founded on Judy's desire to help.

Car buyers loved the concept, the business flourished, and soon Judy could no longer do it alone. She spoke with Karla Cooper, a sales manager she frequently dealt with, and a partnership ensued.

Judy Kilburn

Judy Kilburn grew up in St. Petersburg, FL. She graduated from University of Florida in 1972 with a B.A. in education. Judy enjoyed teaching for the next 5 years but truly had an interest in starting her own business. In 1977 she opened American
Chariots Auto Brokers, a service oriented company helping the public in purchasing or leasing a new vehicle. The public response to this kind of service was an immediate success.

Karla Cooper

Karla Cooper grew up in Alkol, WV. After graduating she served 7 years in the US Army, obtaining the rank of sergeant. In 1988 Karla began her career in the automobile business. In 1994 she joined American Chariots Auto Brokers as a partner.

She is a graduate of Miami Dade College. Karla currently serves on the board of the Red Sunset Merchants Association, is a Trustee of Chamber South and she is a member of the Women’s Veteran Association. To contact Karla click here.
